The close-knit Louth hurling community has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Niall McEneaney.
Aged just 42, the former county hurler and well-known coach died after being struck by a vehicle in Drogheda in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Niall played with Wolfe Tones for many years until they folded before joining Mattock Rangers and helping them to an historic Louth SHC final appearance in 2011. He also lined out at corner forward on the Louth team that lost the inaugural Nickey Rackard Cup final to London at Croke Park in 2005.
Married to Grace, he managed St Fechin’s in Termonfeckin to the last two Louth SHC titles and was seen as a future Louth hurling manager.
In a heartfelt tribute, St Fechin’s said on Facebook: “With the most profound sorrow we record the tragic death of our most esteemed Hurling manager, Niall MacEneaney. Our condolences to his wife, Grace, his parents, family and friends.
“We, as a club, and in particular the Hurling team are all absolutely devastated. Niall was loved and revered by every hurler with whom he worked. His contribution to St. Fechin’s hurling was immeasurable.
“His passion for hurling was infectious and his commitment to hard work and high standards on the field of play was inspirational. He is irreplaceable but his extraordinary legacy will live on.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
