Corofin returned to the Galway SFC winners’ enclosure for the first time since 2019 after withstanding a late rally from holders Moycullen at Pearse Stadium.
Kevin Johnson’s new-look charges held on for a 1-11 to 1-9 victory after a late 1-1 from former Offaly captain Johnny Moloney took it to the wire. The victory secured a remarkable 13th Galway SFC medal for 39-year-old Gary Sice who accounted for 0-5 (0-4 from frees) of his side’s tally. The key score came from Tony Gill in the 50th minute which gave Corofin a seven-point lead heading down the home straight.
Despite the absence of county star Sean Kelly due to injury, Moycullen were fancied to retain the Frank Fox Cup. They scored six points from six attempts in the opening half – including two each from Peter Cooke and Owen Gallagher – but still trailed by 0-6 to 0-7 at the break.
With Dylan Wall and Liam Silke to the fore, Corofin kept their noses in front before Gill’s goal looked to have put them out of sight. But Moloney's 1-1 and a Dessie Conneely free left them hanging on at the end.
