The first Galway team to win an All-Ireland SHC title 100 years ago will be honoured and remembered next month.
The Raheen Woods Hotel in Athenry will host the event on Friday week, November 10. It is being organised by Baireoiri na Gaillimhe, which is made up of former Galway players, and will be attended by relatives and descendants of the team.
The 1923 All-Ireland SHC final wasn't played until September 1924 because of the Irish Civil War. Galway defeated Limerick by 7-3 to 4-5 in the final in Croke Park after seeing off Kilkenny by 5-4 to 2-0 in the semi-final.
Remarkably, the Tribesmen had to wait another 57 years for their second All-Ireland hurling win in 1980.
