Dessie Dolan will serve a second season as Westmeath senior football manager following his reappointment at last night's county board meeting.

Having previously served as a selector under Jack Cooney, the former All-Star forward assumed the top job this year. After failing to secure promotion from Division 3 of the Allianz League and then losing to Louth in the Leinster SFC after surrendering a big lead, Westmeath redeemed themselves with a number of strong performances in the All-Ireland SFC series.

Last year’s Tailteann Cup champions didn’t look out of place in a very difficult All-Ireland SFC group where they ran both Armagh and Galway close before drawing with Tyrone and almost snatching a famous win after John Heslin’s last-gasp free tailed inches wide. Had that gone over, they would have qualified for the knockout stages of the Sam Maguire.

"Westmeath GAA are delighted to announce the ratification of Dessie Dolan as manager of the Westmeath senior footballers for 2024. Backroom team to be announced," a county board statement read.

Meanwhile, former All-Ireland MFC winning captain Damien Gavin has been ratified as U20 football manager for a fifth year, while Kevin O'Brien returns for a second stint as U20 hurling manager after Andrew Dermody held the position this year.
