Potential excites former Cork boss

Kieran Kingston believes the foundations are in place for Cork to end their long wait for the All-Ireland SHC success.

The Rebels haven’t lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup since 2006, while they suffered an early championship exit this summer, despite producing some strong performances in the Munster SHC.

“When you see that we've had an All-Ireland minor win, we've contested five of the last six All-Ireland U-20s or U-21 finals and next year's U-20 are really, really strong as well. They were a minor team that won the All-Ireland. So that's six out of seven U-20s/U-21 teams that have been either victorious or really competitive, or being in a final, assuming that next year Cork can go on,” the former Cork manager told gaa.ie at the launch of the Hurling Shinty International 2023, which takes place in Newry this Saturday afternoon.

“So that gives you a great base, or a combination of those players together, between the young and the not so young or not so old either, like, you'd have to think that that collective of players would have to be really, really competitive and hopefully successful in the not too short and not too distant future.”
