Ciaran Meenagh has joined the Down senior football management team just a month after ruling himself out of taking the Derry manager's job on a permanent basis.

The Tyrone man replaced Rory Gallagher in the Oak Leaf hotseat on the eve of this year's Ulster SFC final and led them to a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Armagh before guiding them through the All-Ireland SFC round-robin series and to an All-Ireland quarter-final victory over Cork.

But their season ended with a 1-15 to 1-17 All-Ireland semi-final loss to Kerry.

It was reported at the time that Meenagh would instead focus on managing his native Loughmacrory and his teaching career in Draperstown, but he has now agreed to join Marty Clarke, Mickey Donnelly and Declan Morgan in Conor Laverty's Mourne County backroom team.

Meanwhile, Mickey Harte - who has replaced Meenagh as Derry boss - has added Paul McFlynn to his coaching ticket. A star wing-back who gave the county outstanding service from 1997 until 2006, McFlynn joins former team-mate and outgoing selector Enda Muldoon as well as Gavin Devlin and Murtagh O'Brien in the new set-up.
