Former Connacht, Wasps and Ireland rugby star Johnny O’Connor has joined the Galway hurling manager Henry Shefflin’s backroom team as lead athletic development coach.

Galway Bay FM is reporting that the Galway native will replace Lukasz Kirszenstein, who had worked with the Tribesmen since their All-Ireland winning 2017 season. O’Connor takes up the full-time role after spells as a strength and conditioning coach with Arsenal, Galway United and Connacht Rugby.

In a successful playing career, the flanker won two Heineken Cups and two Premierships with Wasps either side of a 10-year stint with Connacht. He was also capped 12 times by Ireland who he helped to a Triple Crown success in 2006.
