McBride released by Essendon

St. Ultan's Cian McBride

Cian McBride could be on his way back to Meath after being let go by AFL outfit Essendon.

The former Royal County underage star has been released along with two other players - Alastair Lord and Rhett Montgomerie – the club has announced. While McBride would be a welcome addition to Colm O’Rourke’s squad, he may yet opt to stay in Australia and seek a new club.

McBride joined the Bombers in 2019 as an international rookie, but never played an AFL game for them. During the AFL off-season in 2021, he returned home to line out for St Ultan’s in the Meath JFC. The Bohermeen / Martry club reached the semi-final that year, only to lose to champions-elect St Vincent’s after extra-time.

McBride was called into the Meath senior squad amid the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 before picking up an injury.
