The Westmeath SFC has reached the knockout stages following the completion of group games at the weekend.

Favourites St Loman’s, Mullingar and Coralstown/Kinnegad are straight through to the semi-finals after finishing first and second respectively in Section A. St Loman’s saw off Killucan by 3-9 to 1-9 thanks to goals from John Heslin (two) and Shane Dempsey, while Pascal Kellaghan’s Coralstown/Kinnegad bounced back from their surprise defeat to Killucan last time out with a 2-9 to 0-7 victory over Tyrrellspass.

Despite that loss, Tyrrellspass finished fourth in the group to set up a quarter-final meeting with surprise-packets Tang, who topped the weaker Section B, despite suffering their first defeat of the campaign at the hands of Shandonagh. Shane Curran’s Caulry drew 1-9 apiece with vanquished champions The Downs to finish third in Section A and qualify for a quarter-final against Athlone, who came from behind to beat local rivals and an already-relegated Garrycastle in Section B.

Mullingar Shamrocks beat Moate All-Whites in the other Section B tie, but it was all in vain as they bowed out.

The Athlone v Caulry quarter-final is scheduled for 5.30pm next Saturday, while the Tang v Tyrrellspass quarter-final takes place at the same time on Sunday with TEG Cusack Park hosting both games.
