Cargin are through to the last eight of the Antrim senior football championship once more after handing St John’s a 5-12 to 2-9 defeat on home turf yesterday (Friday) evening.

Goal from Conhuir Johnston and Pat Shivers inside the opening six minutes gave the hosts the perfect start before St John’s got back on level terms thanks to some brilliant scores by Patrick McBride and more points via Conall Bohill and Conall Quinn.

Shivers’ second goal knocked the stuffing out of the Johnnies however, and the holders would net again before half-time through James Laverty to leave it at 4-3 to 0-9 come the break.

Cargin hit the first three points of the restart to increase their lead to nine and, despite a Connor Hand penalty hitting their net, they were able to see out the win in comfort with Tomas McCann registering their fifth and final goal from the penalty spot.

Along with the holders progression through to the quarter-finals, the result, combined with Rossa’s draw at Tir na nOg, means 24-time champions St John’s are now out of the senior championship race in the Saffron County.
