Casement Park developers cease trading

The revised plans for Casement Park revealed in October 2016

Plans to redevelop Casement Park have suffered a fresh blow with the news that one of the main contractors on the project has stopped trading.

The Buckingham Group has filed a notice to appoint administrators, but stressed it is not currently in administration. Based in Buckinghamshire, the company has been redeveloping football stadiums, including Anfield in Liverpool, but now finds itself on the brink due to rapidly-escalating contract losses and a sharp reduction in liquidity.

Heron Buckingham JV, a consortium with Draperstown-based Heron Brothers, was awarded the contract to redevelop the home of Antrim GAA into a 38,000-seater stadium in 2013. But the project, which has been included in a joint UK and Ireland bid to host the 2028 European Soccer Championships, has been delayed by planning objections and the lack of a functioning Executive at Stormont.

Ulster GAA told BBC Northern Ireland that it remains "fully focused on work commencing on site early next year."
