SFC Group D: First win for Ballinabrackey

August 14, 2023

Ballinabrackey's Danny Quinn

Ballinabrackey 2-13 Gaeil Colmcille 0-14

Ballinabrackey got their first Championship win of the year on Sunday as they overcame Gaeil Colmcille by 5 points.

Kells got the first two scores from quick moving play but it was our county man Sean Coffey who got the Bracks their first score. A couple of wides from both sides followed but Dean McNamee helped settle the nerves with a point from play.  Kells got another free but the next couple of scores came from Danny Quinn and Damien Carroll. Gaeil Colmcille got the last score just before half time leaving the Bracks ahead by 2. The teams were well matched in the first half and it was all to play for at half time.

An important first score to start the second half came from Richie Coffey but Kells added on their own score the far end of the field. Mark Coffey found himself in the right place at the right time and got the ball in the back of the net 3 minutes into the second half. Kells didn’t drop the heads and continued to press up with another 2 scores coming from play but the Ballinabrackey goal gave good confidence and scores came from Smullen and Danny Quinn. Sean Coffey was an evident leader on the field in this came and his strength and speed resulted in him getting a goal for the Bracks putting them in a comfortable position. Kells went for goal but it was Adam O’Brien who saved it and carried out of defence for the Bracks and who also put the Kells forwards through their paces. Danny Quinn kicked another free for the Bracks but Kells kept the pressure on and kicked 4 unanswered points. It wasn’t to be enough for them though as Danny Quinn’s accurate free taking kept Ballinabrackey moving along. The Bracks finished this game with a 5 point win and were happy leaving Trim with the win. The next game against Wolfe Tones in two weeks will have it all to play for.
