There will be a new name on the Dan Breen Cup this year after Kilruane MacDonaghs were dethroned by Roscrea at the weekend.

Goals from Shane Fletcher (two), Alan Tynan and Conor Dooley inspired last year's Premier intermediate champions to a thrilling 4-21 to 3-19 victory in Nenagh. It was the holders' second defeat which means they are out of the championship and needing to win in the third round to avoid a relegation battle.

Elsewhere, Brendan Maher rolled back to the years by scoring a last-gasp goal to hand Borris-Ileigh a dramatic 2-22 to 2-21 victory over Kiladangan. The former county star had gone off at half-time after feeling unwell, but was sprung from the bench late on with telling effect.

Seamus Callanan bagged 1-7 as Drom & Inch overcame Mullinahone by 3-21 to 2-19 to book their quarter-final spot. Helped by 0-12 from John McGrath, Loughmore-Castleiney edged out Holycross-Ballycahill by 1-27 to 3-20, while Nenagh Éire Óg powered to a 5-15 to 1-15 win over JK Brackens, with Mikey Heffernan, Barry Heffernan, Adam Carey, Philip Hickey and Cian Crowley all raising green flags.

Sarsfields finished strongly to trump Clonoulty-Rossmore by 1-20 to 1-17, while Upperchurch-Drombane got their first win at Templederry's expense, 1-23 to 1-18.
