Joe Fortune has agreed to a third year in charge of the Westmeath senior hurlers.

It comes after a mixed season for the Lake County who retained their Allianz League Division 1 status by virtue of a relegation playoff victory over Laois, but were demoted from the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Westmeath looked to have preserved their top-flight status after a sensational comeback victory over Wexford, but a heavy defeat to Antrim in the last round of the Leinster SHC round-robin series, coupled with Wexford’s surprise win over Kilkenny, relegated them.

In a statement confirming Fortune's decision to remain at the helm - which rules him out of the race to fill the managerial vacancy in his native Wexford - Westmeath GAA said: “Joe Fortune has agreed to remain in post for a third year as the Westmeath senior hurling team manager for 2024. Selectors and backroom team will be confirmed later. The Westmeath County Board wishes Joe and the team the very best of luck during the season ahead.”
