Galway kept up their winning ways in this year’s championship by coming through a stern challenge against Westmeath in Mullingar to remain top of the All-Ireland SFC Group 2 table.

It finished 0-20 to 0-12 at TEG Cusack Park, where Damien Comer came off the bench to land three points for the Tribesmen at a crucial juncture in this round-robin clash.

Westmeath had been the better team during the opening 35 minutes and took in a deserved 0-7 to 0-6 lead at the break thanks to the points of Ronan O’Toole, Luke Loughlin and Sam McCartan.

Shane Walsh’s free squared the sides at the start of the second-half and they would be level again in the 50th minute before the hosts lost Ray Connellan to a second caution after he fouled John Maher.

Comer’s introduction soon afterwards saw him landing back-to-back points in quick succession and the moment built from there for the Connacht champions as they went on a run of six unanswered points that sealed them the win.
