Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Meath and Wexford all made winning starts to their Leinster MFC campaigns last night.
Holders Dublin had to work hard for their 1-15 to 1-10 Group 2 victory over Louth at Parnell Park. An early Noah Byrne goal gave the Dubs the perfect start, but Louth stayed in touch and trailed by the minimum when Shane Lennon netted in the 47th minute. However, seven points from Lenny Cahill helped Dublin to win.
In the same group, Ben Corkery scored 2-1 as Meath got the better of neighbours Westmeath by 2-10 to 0-10 in Kinnegad. The Clann na nGael player bagged goals in either half for the Royals who led by 1-3 to 0-3 at the interval.
Westmeath fought back to trail by a point with 10 minutes remaining before Corkery's second major settled it.
In Group 1, Joey Cunningham scored 0-9 (0-5 from play) as Kildare recorded a comfortable 3-15 to 2-11 victory over 14-man Offaly at Hawkfield. Tadhg Donlan, Jack McCabe and Cian Keaveny also raised green flags for the winners, while Cillian Bourke accounted for both of Offaly's goals.
Also in Group 1, Laois romped to 2-12 to 1-2 win over Longford at Laois Hire O'Moore Park with David Donohue and Jamilio Salvador scoring their goals. Patrick Mollahan was the Longford goal-scorer.
In Group 3, Wexford withstood a late Carlow rally to prevail by 1-10 to 1-7 at Chadwicks Wexford Park. Darren Rossiter grabbed an early major for the hosts, but they were left hanging on after Shane Reddy netted for the visitors in the closing stages. Wicklow had a bye.
