Mulligan retires from Leitrim duty

Emlyn Mulligan has brought the curtain down on his 17-year Leitrim senior football career.
The prolific forward’s longevity was remarkable considering he suffered three cruciate knee ligament injuries during his career in 2009, ’10 and ’17. The 35-year-old made his debut in 2006 and captained Leitrim to their first FBD Insurance League title in 2013. He also helped Connacht to Inter-provincial success that year.
A talented soccer player in his younger days, Mulligan stepped away from the panel after suffering his third cruciate ligament injury, only to make a surprise return under Andy Moran last year. He made his 100th Leitrim appearance against neighbours Sligo this time last year.
“Unfortunately, my days of representing Leitrim GAA have come to an end. Past injuries have caught up with me and my body just can’t deal with the demands to compete at inter-county level anymore,” he tweeted.
“It was a pleasure. Thanks for all the support since making my league debut in 2006 until now.
“Looking forward to heading to New York next week, now as a supporter, to cheer on Andy and the lads.”
