There was no shortage of drama in today’s Ashbourne Cup final as extra time was needed to separate TU Dublin and UCC at Dave Billings Park, Belfield.
Antrim star Roisin McCormick proved the hero for the Dublin students on the evening as her free in extra time injury-time sealed the third-level camogie championship title on a 1-11 to 0-13 scoreline.
McCormick also forced the extra periods for her college with a clutch free at the end of normal time.
The would-be winners looked home and hosed once Westmeath’s Megan Dowdall netted their goal in the sixth minute of the first-half of extra.
However, UCC fought back brilliantly as points from Cliona O'Leary, Laura Hayes and Clodagh Finn brought them right back into it and a penalty shoot-out looked destined to decide where the trophy was headed.
In the dying stages, Kerrie Finnegan earned a free for TU Dublin along the right flank and sharpshooter McCormick held her nerve to sail it over (see below) and secure a first success in this competition for her college.
