UL and DCU Dóchas Éireann are the first two teams through to the Sigerson Cup semi-finals.
UL avenged last year's final defeat to University of Galway with a 1-15 to 2-10 extra-time victory in a dramatic quarter-final at Dangan last night. Goals from Mark McInerney and Gerard Davoren helped the holders to a 2-3 to 0-6 half-time lead, but UL scored 1-5 without reply after the restart to take the lead, with the goal coming from substitute Paul Walsh in the 48th minute.
After a brilliant late point from Galway star Sean Kelly had forced extra-time for Maurice Sheridan's side, UL composed themselves and won a thriller thanks to points in the second period of extra-time from the Clare duo Emmet McMahon and Ciaran Downes.
In last night's other quarter-final, second half goals from Jack Bryant and Lorcan O'Dell steered DCU Dóchas Éireann to a 2-12 to 0-9 victory over MTU Cork.
Despite being without the injured Rob Finnerty, Paddy Christie's side led by 0-7 to 0-5 at the interval thanks to five points from Meath's Matthew Costello. Ryan O'Donovan and David Buckley combined for all of the Cork students' first half tally, but they lost their way in the second half as DCU Dóchas Éireann prevailed with plenty to spare.
