Kilmacud Crokes are 60 minutes away from capturing their third All-Ireland club senior football championship crown after surviving a late scare from Kerins O’Rahillys this afternoon.
The Dublin giants were made to fight to the end for their 1-14 to 0-14 victory at Croke Park, where Hugh Kenny’s goal five minutes into the second-half ultimately proved the difference in them making an immediate return to the Andy Merrigan Cup decider.
Points from Kenny, Shane Horan, Shane Cunningham and Dara Mullin had helped Crokes to lead by 0-8 to 0-6 at the halfway stage and Kenny would hit the jackpot for them five minutes into the restart.
The corner-forward was quickest to Shane Walsh’s point attempt which came off the crossbar and slotted into the O’Rahillys’ net.
Kenny and Aidan Jones struck over points that made it a double scores game (1-11 to 0-7) but the Munster champions battled back brilliantly in the closing quarter.
Jack Savage was very much to the fore for the trailers as they outscored their opponents by 0-7 to 0-3 from the 50th minute and there’d be a goal in it when Savage sent in a free to the Crokes’ square which ended up being cleared off the goal line.
It saw the Stillorgan men hang on for the victory as they now get set to face either Glen or Moycullen in the final at HQ in a fortnight’s time.
