Down got their Dr McKenna Cup campaign off to a winning start last night as they overcame Monaghan by 2-10 to 0-12 in Castleblayney.
Goals from Andrew Gilmore and Odhran Murdock paved the way to victory for the Mourne men, with the former’s leading them towards a 1-6 to 0-6 interval lead.
'Man of the Match' Murdock had the ball in the Farney men’s net within two minutes of the restart and, from there, Conor Laverty’s charges were able to see out an opening win over the holders.
In Section B, Tyrone scored a comfortable 0-17 to 1-7 win against Fermanagh in Omagh while Section C saw Armagh run up an impressive 2-20 tally against Antrim at the Athletic Grounds.
Conor Turbitt and Joe Sheridan were the goal scorers for Kieran McGeeney’s men while Odhran Eastwood netted a brace for Antrim at the other end as they lost by a dozen points.
