Conor Madden and Oisin Pierson struck the goals as Gowna crushed Cavan Gaels tonight to join Crosserlough and Killygarry in the semi-finals of the Cavan senior football championship.
It finished 2-14 to 0-9 at Kingspan Breffni, where the Longford border men never looked back in this quarter-final replay once Conor Madden hammered in their first goal after just three minutes.
From there, the winners kicked on for a 1-7 to 0-4 half-time lead as Eoghan Hartin, Tiernan Madden (2) and Conor Brady erased the points of Evan Fortune, Gearoid McKiernan (2) and Declan Meehan.
Gowna extended their lead out to out nine early in the restart thanks to the points of Cian Madden (two frees) and Robbie Fitzpatrick before McKiernan grabbed a brace at the other end to try and stop the rot for the Terry Coyle Park men.
The Cavan star’s free had it at 1-11 to 0-7 with a quarter of an hour to go but the game was up for the Gaels once Pierson came off the bench and slotted home Gowna’s second goal on 51 minutes.
With the margin at 10 points, there was no coming back for the 2017 winners and Ryan Donohoe and Cian Madden (2) rounded off the victory for Fintan Reilly’s charges as they now get set for a crunch clash with Crosserlough in a bid to make it back-to-back finals.
Tomorrow (Sunday) sees holders Ramor United up against Mullahoran in the weekend’s other quarter-final replay, with throw-in at Kingspan Breffni scheduled for 12.30pm.
