August 22, 2022

Moynalvey's Cillian O'Sullivan

Moynalvey made it two wins from two in Group B of the Fairyhouse Steel Meath Senior Football Championship with a seven point win over Navan O’Mahonys at Fr. McManus Park Skryne on Sunday afternoon August 21st.

Moynalvey 2-14
Navan O’Mahonys 0-13

Coupled with Trim’s convincing win over Curraha on Saturday evening along with Moynalvey’s win on Sunday afternoon the results sees both sides on four points heading in into their third round meeting against each other in a fortnight’s time.

Both John Donoghue’s Moynalvey and Kevin Reilly’s Trim now find their sides qualified for the quarter-finals with the third round encounter deciding the first and second place placings within the group ahead of the knockout stages.

It was Moynalvey who raced out of the blocks early opening up a 1-3 to no score lead, before Navan O’Mahonys eventually registered in the 10th minute via a point from play from Jake Regan.

Moynalvey’s early 1-3 came from points by Adam Murphy, David McLoughlin (2) and an opportunistic flicked finish to the net from seventeen year old Vinny Walsh after a point attempt was dropping short.

Just as they did against Trim in the opening round O’Mahonys were slow to start, but by the 15th minute just the goal separated the sides with a brace of scores from Duggie Dilon and Evan Coffey leaving it 1-3 to 0-3 at the quarter hour mark.

The goal remained between the sides as referee Martin Dawson drew the first have to a close, 1-7 to 0-7. O’Mahonys’ did fight back to level matters 1-4 to 0-7 with points from Conor Finnegan (2) and Cathal Smyth with two minutes of the opening half remaining.

However, three Moynalvey points from David McLoughlin, Adam Murphy and Cillian O’Sullivan before the half time whistle gave them a three point half time advantage, 1-7 to 0-7.

The sides may have been level at the break, but for Jake Regan sending a first half penalty wide of Ray Ryan’s posts via the upright.

The men in maroon got off to the perfect second half start with a Cillian O’Sullivan point, which was quickly responded to by Aodhan Mallon for Navan O’Mahonys.

David McLoughlin and Conor Shirren pointed either side of a Jake Regan free for O’Mahonys to leave it 1-10 to 0-9 with nine minutes of the second half played.

The theme of little separating the sides continued until a second Moynalvey goal this time from the boot of Cillian O’Sullivan in the 47th minute to put some real daylight between the sides for the first time since the early stages, 2-12 to 0-10.

Soon after that O’Sullivan goal O’Mahonys were reduced to fourteen men with the dismissal off centre forward Duggie Dillon.

Navan O’Mahonys added three points to their tally through a Jake Regan free and two from Aodhan Mallon before the full time whistle.

Moynalvey added points from David McLoughlin and Cillian O’Sullivan to round off the seven point victory on a 2-14 to 0-13 score line.

The final and third round Group B game between Moynalvey and Trim will take place in Summerhill in a fortnight’s time on Saturday evening 3rd September.
