Navan O’Mahony’s 0-13 Moynalvey 2-14
In spite of playing well for large patches of this Round 2 SFC game, Navan O’Mahony’s came away the wrong end and will find themselves embroiled in the relegation play offs. After a poor start, the Brews Hill side recovered well but Moynalvey managed to pull away in the second half.
Moynalvey opened the scoring within seconds, winning the ball from the throw in and working a well-taken score. In the next five minutes, they added a goal and two more points, leading by six points after as many minutes. Settling his side, Jake Regan pointed from play, followed shortly afterwards by a well-placed shot by Duggie Dillon.
Midfielder Evan Coffey reduced the deficit to three points with a point from 35 yards. A Moynalvey free broke this run for Navan O’Mahony’s and left four points in it again. Conor Finnegan scored the first of three excellent points from him to make it a single score game again. Indeed, it looked like this score would be coming when Aodhan Mallon broke through on goal, only to be fouled in the process. In the resulting penalty, Regan was denied by the upright and the ball went wide
Continuing their strongest period of the game, a point from Cathal Smyth and two further scores from Finnegan left things all square after twenty-eight minutes. Looking like there would be little between the sides at the interval, Moynalvey kicked three points in the space of two minutes and Navan O’Mahony’s found themselves three adrift at half time.
Navan O’Mahony’s 0-07 Moynalvey 1-07
Just as they had done in the first half, Moynalvey opened the half’s scoring within seconds with a point from play. Mallon nullified this the opposite end of the field and there was three points between the sides again.
Much of the next ten or so minutes of the game followed a similar pattern, with scores happening both ends of the field but Navan O’Mahony’s unable to get within three points of the Moynalvey side. Two points in a row, followed shortly by a goal gave Moynalvey enough of a cushion to hold firm, with Navan O’Mahony’s down to fourteen men following a straight red card to Duggie Dillon.
Scores from Regan and Mallon in the final quarter of the game brought up Navan O’Mahony’s score but there was too much of a bridge to gap to claim the game. Two points from Moynalvey in injury time left them seven points the victor and secured them a place in the knockout stages.
Navan O’Mahony’s now face Curraha in the final game, with both teams doomed to be featuring in the relegation quarter finals.
