SFC: Moynalvey march past spirited O'Mahonys and into last eight

Moynalvey's David McLoughlin

Moynalvey's reward for being too good for O'Mahonys in this round two fixture at Skryne at midday on Sunday is a last eight place.

Moynalvey ............ 2-14
O'Mahonys ............0-13

A second win from as many SFC outings puts Moynalvey into the knockout stage while O'Mahonys are bound for the relegation series for the second year running.

John Donoghue's men made most of the running and were never headed when recording their second win of the campaign. O'Mahonys were much improved on their opening round loss to Trim and with a bit more composure might have finished closer to John Donoghue's side.

Moynalvey were first from the blocks hitting 1-3 inside seven minutes. Vinny Walsh's goal was the last score in that sequence.

Six down, O'Mahonys set about erasing the deficit to good effect. A brace of points from midfielder Conor Finnegan was central to the town side regaining parity, 0-7 to 1-4, by 29th minute.

The scoreboard might have looked better from an O'Mahonys' perspective, but Jake Regan's 13th minute penalty - awarded for a foul on Aodhan Mallon - struck Ray Ryan's left hand upright and went wide.

Moynalvey responded well to being reeled in, displaying their superiority to regain the lead quickly and keeping it to the end.

Having chalked up just one score in 20 minutes, Moynalvey closed the half with a trio of points from David McMcLoughlin (free), Cillian O'Sullivan (free) and Adam Murphy to forge a 1-7 to 0-7 interval advantage.

Twice O'Mahonys got to within three points of Moynalvey in the third quarter, but soon found themselves five off the pace when Mark O'Sullivan pointed with aplomb.

Early in the final quarter the outcome was settled when Cillian O'Sullivan goaled to leave the nearby scoreboard reading 2-12 to 0-10.

Duggie Dillon's 49th minute dismissal occurred when his side were eight points off the pace. Earlier in the half a high profile entanglement between Jake Regan and Moynalvey's Sean Duggan saw both players receive yellow cards.

O'Mahonys outscored Moynalvey by 0-3 to 0-2 in the latter stages but couldn't muster the required goal to revive their bid for points here.

Evan Coffey went close to netting in stoppage time but his effort went low and wide. A highly proficient Moynalvey rearguard did their bit in keeping a clean sheet for the second SFC outing running.
