Wolfe Tones Padraic Diamond and Oisin Martin put pressure on Harry Rooney Skryne during the Meath SFC game at Pairc Tailteann

Wolfe Tones 3-9 Skryne 0-12

A combination of goals and a greater physical presence were the key ingredients as Keegan Cup holders Wolfe Tones made a winning start to the Meath SFC on a perfect surface at Pairc Tailteann.

Both teams lined out without key players most notably Cian Ward (Tones) and Darragh Campion (Skryne).

The impressive Saran O Fionnagain had three points on the scoreboard within ten minutes. Skryne were reliant on Niall Finnerty in attack, the talented corner forward hit three first half points.

A well worked goal midway through the half from Oisin Martin opened up a four point gap and Michael McDermott’s side carried a 1-6 to 0-4 lead to the dressing room at half time.

Davy Byrne’s men came out a different team and controlled the opening ten minutes kicking five points from Finnerty, Mark Battersby (2), Oisin Keogh and Conor O’Brien to narrow the lead to the minimum.

But just as they were getting a foothold Tones broke upfield and O Fionnagain finished a fine move to the net. Shane Smyth replied for Skryne before the holders got in from their third goal courtesy of Thomas O’Reilly. Caolan Ward followed with a point and Wolfe Tones were on their way to victory with eight minutes remaining.

Wolfe Tones scorers:  Saran O Fionnagain 1-3, Thomas Reilly 1-0, Oisin Martin 1-0, Caolan Ward 0-3, Niall O'Reilly 0-2, Stephen Sheppard 0-1.

Skryne scorers: Niall Finnerty 0-6, Mark Battersby 0-2, Shane Smyth Harry Rooney, John Finnerty and  Conor O'Brien 0-1 each
