Cavan GAA is in mourning following the death of one of its greatest defenders, Enda McGowan.

The former Breffni County captain won Ulster senior football titles in 1967 and 1969 and travelled to San Francisco with the All-Star team in the 1970s.

A native of Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, Enda was known as a tenacious defender and man-marker and won Railway Cup medals with Ulster in 1970 and 1971.

He represented Ballyhaise at club level and lined-out in the 1978 county senior championship final which Cavan Gaels won on a 1-10 to 0-6 score-line to capture back-to-back titles.

After hanging up his boots, Enda went on to become a selector with the Cavan senior team and would be part of the set-up when they reached the 1983 Ulster SFC final, losing out to Donegal.

He is survived by his loving wife Anne, daughters Jennifer and Claudine and son Ciaran.

Reposing at Lakelands Funeral Home, Dublin Road, Cavan, Thursday from 5-8pm. Requiem Mass on Friday afternoon at 4pm in St Mary’s Church, Ballyhaise followed by Cremation at Lakelands Crematorium, Dublin Road, Cavan. Family flowers only, please.
