Westmeath made their goals count in a 3-13 to 0-14 victory over Longford in the quarter-finals of the Leinster senior football championship this evening at TEG Cusack Park.
John Heslin, Ronan O'Toole and Robbie Forde supplied the goals as Jack Cooney’s men registered an eight-point win on their opening championship assignment of 2022 and claimed the derby spoils in the process.
Points from Heslin, Nigel Harte and Alex Gardiner helped the hosts to lead by 0-8 to 0-3 before Heslin tucked in the rebound of Gardiner’s goal effort on 28 minutes.
It saw the Lake men go on to carry in a 1-9 to 0-4 lead at the half and Ray Connellan and Heslin would up their lead to 10 points early in the restart.
It went from bad to worse for the visitors when substitute O’Toole blasted in the game’s second goal in the 49th minute, making it 2-11 to 0-5.
Longford registered the next six points in response but the game was up for them and Forde wrapped up the win for Westmeath by hammering in their third goal in injury-time.
