Billy Sheehan shouldered the blame after Laois' season went from bad to worse in Aughrim yesterday.

After suffering back-to-back relegations in the Allianz League last month, the O'Moore County conceded a massive 5-15 as they lost to Wicklow in the Leinster SFC for the first time since the infamous 'Battle of Aughrim' in 1986. The defeat consigns them to the the inaugural Tailteann Cup, which begins in four weeks' time.

"I'm not going to disregard how well Wicklow played," the Laois manager told RTÉ.

"In the whole game they'd only two wides. They gave an exhibition of kicking. For Laois I'm sure the people in the county won't be happy.

"The county board, the supporters, the players - they won't be happy. The buck stops with me as manager and that's the way it is.

"It was a very, very poor performance, especially in the first half. The boys have done everything right for me so it stops at my doorstep, not anyone else's."
