Galway posted their second win from as many outings in Division 2 of the Allianz Football League at Pairc Esler this evening when proving too good for Down on a 1-12 to 0-9 scoreline.
Playing with the backing of a gale-force wind, the Tribesmen quickly established a foothold when Paul Conroy opened the scoring from a goal six minutes in after being teed up by Shane Walsh.
Lining out at midfield, Conroy followed up with two sublime points, while Rob Finnerty, Walsh and Damien Comer were also on the mark as Padraic Joyce's men moved 1-7 to 0-2 in front at the break.
The gap was halved after the resumption, as the hosts staged a mini comeback with four unanswered points, three of them coming from Barry O’Hagan, who registered 0-5 overall, but Galway stood firm until the end in Newry as Walsh kept the scoreboard ticking over.

There was a much tighter contest at Pairc Ui Chaoimh as Clare substitute Daniel Walsh struck late to earn the Banner County a 1-13 apiece draw with Cork.
Clare led 0-9 to 0-6 at half-time, having played with a significant breeze in their favour.
Deadlocked at 0-11 each on 58 minutes, Colm Collins' outfit looked set to record their second victory on the bounce when Keelan Sexton fired home a penalty after a foul on Podge Collins.
Cork then struck for a fortuitous goal after an attempted Brian Hurley point had fell short and left them two points up but scores from Emmett McMahon and Walsh got Clare back on level terms.
