Waterford's Jack Fagan produced a moment of brilliance worthy of winning any game and it proved the difference between the sides as the Deise gained a measure of revenge over 13-men Limerick for last year's All-Ireland final defeat.
Trailing by two points in the 54th minute, Meath native Fagan soared into the Walsh Park sky to pluck a Stephen Bennett delivery before firing to Nickie Quaid's net from close range. Deise captain Conor Prunty led by example from the full-back line and was awarded man-of-the match.
The All-Ireland champions had Seamus Flanagan red carded on 28 minutes for an off-the-ball incident involving Conor Gleeson while wing-back Kyle Hayes also got his marching orders near the end after a massive brawl erupted. All-Star defender Diarmaid Byrnes and Hurler of the Year Gearoid Hegarty were both absent for the Treaty County who are still without a win in Group B of the Allianz League.
