It emerged this evening that Paul Galvin has stepped down as manager of the Wexford senior football team.

The former Kerry All-Ireland winner's surprise departure was confirmed in a statement released through Wexford GAA.

Galvin has cited 'the new time and travel commitments' as his reasons for walking away from his first role in inter-county management.

The news comes as a big setback to the Wexford footballers who have been permitted to return to training this week ahead of their remaining two Allianz League matches and Leinster SFC first round clash against Wicklow.

The 40-year-old was appointed Model County boss on a two-year term twelve months ago having replaced Paul McLoughlin but his reign has proved to be shortlived and selector Shane Roche will now take the reins on an interim basis.

"Due to the Covid-19 outbreak in Dublin my family has moved back to the west of Ireland. I am stepping away from my role with Wexford due to the new time and travel commitments involved," Galvin explained.

“My business has also undergone significant growth in the past few months and needs attention.

"I have enjoyed the past 16 months watching, coaching and promoting football in the county since June 2019.

“I would like to thank the Wexford county board for the opportunity and support.

"Thank you to the players and backroom staff also. I have a strong belief in the talent in the county.

“I wish everybody associated with Wexford football success in the near future.”
