Kilcoo coach Conleith Gilligan adopted a diplomatic stance when the performance of referee Paul Faloon was raised following their one-point defeat to Warrenpoint in yesterday’s Down SFC round 2 fixture at Pairc Esler.
The Ulster club champions slipped to a 0-9 to 0-10 loss in what was a repeat of last year’s decider and now enter the back door series while the winners advance to the last eight.
There was controversy at the end, however, as Faloon brought proceedings to an end a minute early and, speaking to BBC Sport Northern Ireland shortly after the final whistle, Gilligan commented: “There’s a lot of stuff I’d like to say, [but] I’d rather not speak about the referee to be honest.
“The timekeeping, everybody has a clock, they know what was going on.
“It wasn’t straight knockout but it didn’t feel like that at the time. It’s hugely disappointing because of the effort and the hundreds of hours them boys put it.
“But look, we’ve another chance at it now, we’ll wait on the draw, and we’re into the backdoor come next weekend again.”
