DCU ended a five-year wait for their fifth Sigerson Cup with a deserved victory over IT Carlow on home turf tonight.

Paddy Christie's side found their rhythm after the break to record a seven-point win at the DCU Sportsgrounds.

The Brendan McCole captained outfit had the assistance of a strong wind in the first-half, at the end of which they led by 0-5 to 0-2.

The hosts opened the scoring through goalkeeper Evan Comerford's long-range free in the first minute and Micheal Bannigan doubled their advantage from another placed ball soon after. 

Cian Farrell then got IT Carlow off the mark from a 14th minute free before Shane Carthy and David Garland responded at the other end.

First-time finalists IT Carlow, who defeated holders UCC en-route to here, were over-reliant on free-taker Cian Farrell for scores and his accuracy kept them in touch with their opponents.

Farrell contributed all bar one of his side's total of 0-7 with Eoin Lowry registering the other point in between two more efforts from impressive man-of-the-match Garland.

The second-half started much like the first with Dublin netminder Comerford coming up the field to take a long-range free and splitting the posts again.

The deficit was quickly stretched out to five by Monaghan man Bannigan before a brace of frees from Farrell brought IT Carlow right back into contention.

But that was as close as Pat Critchley's men got in the second period while Comerford, Bannigan and Garland kept the scoreboard ticking over for DCU.

Dublin senior panellists Sean Bugler and Paddy Small also got in on the scoring act to help the Glasnevin college on their way to a memorable success.
