Dublin-born Jack Smith followed in his father Peter's footsteps when he made his senior football debut for Westmeath yesterday.
The All-Ireland U21 medallist, who recently transferred to the Lake County under the GAA's parentage rule, was a late addition to the team that defeated Longford by 1-14 to 1-10 at TEG Cusack Park to set up a Division 3 promotion shoot-out with Louth in Drogheda next Saturday. The Skerries Harps clubman starred for DCU in their 2015 Sigerson Cup success, but after failing to break into the Dublin senior team, decided to pledge his inter-county allegiances to his father's home county.
Jack's younger brother Stephen lined out at corner forward for Dublin against Westmeath in the O'Byrne Cup final earlier this year, while another brother, Eoin, is also a key player for Skerries Harps who were promoted to Division 1 of the league last year.
Like his father, who starred for Mullingar Shamrocks and Westmeath in the 1980s and early 1990s, Jack is a tight-marking defender who is set to be a useful addition to Jack Cooney's side.
