Declan Bonner has declared his interest in becoming the next Donegal football manager.

The 1992 All-Ireland winning corner forward has managed the county's minor and U21 teams in recent years, and is viewed as the frontrunner to replace Rory Gallagher, who stepped down in the wake of Donegal's heavy All-Ireland SFC qualifier loss to Galway a month ago.

"A number of clubs have put my name forward and I will be allowing it to stay in the ring," Bonner told the Donegal News.

"It's a position that I didn't expect to come up so soon. I had to talk to a lot of people including my family and my work to see if it was even feasible to allow my name to go forward.

"I've had a lot of meetings over the last few weeks to see the lie of the land and I'm happy to move forward on it now."

Down's 1991 and '94 All-Ireland winning manager Pete McGrath and current Ballymun Kickhams boss Paddy Carr are also in the running, but the smart money is on Bonner reprising the role he previously held between 1997 and 2000.
