Seamus McEnaney has resigned his post as Wexford senior football manager after just one season in charge.

The Monaghan man steered the Slayneysiders to promotion from Division 4 of the National League in the spring but endured a difficult summer which included a shock loss to Carlow in the Leinster SFC before going down to his native county by 19 points in the qualifiers.

Speaking to RTE Sport on his resignation, McEnaney stated that the long trip from his home in Carrickmacross to Ferns in Wexford proved too far for him to travel on a regular basis.

"It was a 500km round trip," the former Monaghan and Meath boss stated. "I'd leave my house at 3pm to head to training and I wouldn't be back again until midnight.

"The driving was the single biggest reason because the county board and the players were top class. We had whatever we needed and the respect, commitment and attitude of the players couldn't be questioned.

"Sometimes in a dual county one of the codes feels like they are missing out, but I can guarantee you we got everything that the hurlers got this year."
