Recognition for Mickey Kearins

September 05, 2003
The great Mickey Kearins has been included in an all-time list of Gaelic Football's Top 20 published in a book. The publication is written by RTE presenter Colm Keane and includes 20 of the greatest players ever to grace the game. Based on a poll of commentators, former and current players, administrators and other people close to the game, the book gives recognition to the Sligo team that won the Connacht SFC in 1975 and, in particular, to Kearins. He is described as "probably the greatest player never to win an All-Ireland." Kearns says in his chapter: "I had plenty of dreams when I was playing myself, but none of them ever came true. It's the same old story with Sligo. I felt we were always short a few players to make the big breakthrough. But that's life and that's Sligo football. "I was disappointed that I didn't have an All-Ireland medal. That's probably the biggest occasion. Even to play on All-Ireland final day would be a wonderful achievement and you would be disappointed not to be there. "It's very important to have new winners of the All-Ireland series. It's wonderful for football when it happens. It would be great for football in Sligo if something like that happened."
