Terry Hyland was always confident Cavan would overcome Carlow's challenge after building up a four-point half-time lead.
The Breffnimen bounced back from their crushing Ulster SFC semi-final replay loss to Tyrone to beat the six-day turnaround and earn another home tie against Ulster rivals Derry next weekend.
"I never thought we were in danger of losing our lead at any stage in the second half," the Cavan manager told the Irish News.
"We upped the tempo in the second half and even when we went a man down, we were fairly comfortable in keeping the gap there between us.
"Carlow worked hard at closing us down and managed to cut down a lot of avenues for us, but the lads stuck to the task and I thought they were very good value for the win."
