Dublin manager Jim Gavin felt Philly McMahon may have been hard done by to receive a black card in the opening stages of last night's win over Mayo.

McMahon received his marching orders just three minutes after the throw-in at Castlebar following a clash with the hosts' stalwart Aidan O'Shea.

Speaking after the game, Gavin admitted it was difficult to see where the referee's decision came from.

"He was checked and then he went after the man, the angle I am looking at obliquely across, it is hard to see where the black card came from," Gavin told the Irish Sun.

"You need to take the referee's word but you need to have a look at the conditions as well. I think there could have been a lot more on both sides.

Dublin's John Small and Mayo's Colm Boyle also went off on second yellow cards as the holders clinched a 0-9 to 0-7 victory at McHale Park.

"I'd have to look at the two black cards again. I'm not going to go after referees at this time of the season, they are difficult games to manage," Gavin stated.
