Micheál Donoghue's reign as Galway manager got off to a winning start today as the Tribesmen overcame DCU's strong challenge in the Walsh Cup by 1-16 to 0-17.

Joe Canning struck for 1-5 as Galway were made to battle on with 14 men for half the match after the dismissal of David Burke on a second yellow card on the eve of half-time.

Canning's 16th minute goal ushered the Tribesmen 1-6 to 0-4 in front by the halfway stage, but Seán Gray and Danny Sutcliffe led the comeback for the Dublin students in the second-half and it required substitutes Eanna Burke and Aidan Harte and Canning to come up trump for the holders in the end.

At DCU's home ground, Ger Cunningham's Dublin were in rampant form for the second-half of their clash with Antrim, prevailing 3-25 to 1-17 winners after the 70 minutes was up.

Paul Ryan's goal helped the Dubs edge a 1-11 to 1-10 half-time lead and from the second-half throw-in they discovered some of their best form to condemn the Saffrons to a 14-point defeat.

In Ballinakill, Laois warmed up for a third round clash with the Metropolitans next week by overcoming UCD, 1-19 to 0-17.

Meanwhile, IT Carlow scored an impressive victory against their home county at Newatch Cullen Park, condemning the Barrowsiders to a 2-15 to 0-14 loss, while Wexford were even more impressive in their 3-18 to 2-7 demolishment of Meath in Navan.
