Former Galway U21 boss John Kelly has withdrawn from the race to replace Anthony Cunningham as the county's new senior hurling manager.

Kelly, who steered Portumna to All-Ireland glory last March, feels that he isn't suited to a management role with the Tribesmen and has wished whoever takes the vacant post the best of luck.

Interviews for the job are set to take place in the coming days, with Cunningham's former assistant Mattie Kenny and ex-Clarinbridge manager Micheál Donohoe thought to be the front-runners, after the recent withdrawals of Kelly and former minor and U21 manager John Hardiman.

"For me, I'm probably more suited to a coaching role than management. It's a very different role and that's what needed in Galway," Kelly said in today's Irish Independent.

"I won't be going any further, we'll let the other lads off and see how it goes. I wish the very best of luck to whoever they pick. I think I would prefer to stick to the coaching side of things for the minute."
