The late Derek Davis and Glasdrumman celebrate

Glasdrumman has paid tribute to the late broadcaster Derek Davis, who managed the Down club to Celebrity Bainisteoir glory in 2009.

The popular broadcaster, who is died yesterday at the age of 67, is fondly remembered in south Down for his participation in the RTE show. The Bangor, Co. Down native kept in touch with Glasdrumman and travelled from his Dublin home to see them defeat Aughlisnafin in a league match earlier this month.

Club spokesman John Brennan told the Irish News: "He had never previously encountered the community sense of the GAA and he was fascinated by how it wasn't just about a sports thing, but was central to the community's identity."

Legendary GAA manager Pete McGrath, who mentored Davis on the show, said: "He had a gift. When he met people he could instantaneously strike up a relationship. The players took to him with great enthusiasm."
