Frank Browne will swap the Longford hurling manager's bib for that of the Mayo ladies football team next year.

The Wexford native spent three years in charge of the midlanders, during which he delivered an Allianz League Division 3B title in 2013 and the Lory Meagher Cup this year following victory over Fermanagh in the final at Croke Park.

"The overriding emotion is we have left Longford in a better place," he told Shannonside Radio.

"This is really important for the county and for going forward. When I look back to three years ago, we weren't able to field for a league game versus Warwickshire, so we have come on a long journey".

Browne, who has also managed the Mayo and Sligo hurlers, will now reprise his role as Mayo ladies boss after an eight-year lapse.

"For me personally it was always something I wanted to go back to. I feel there is great pretension there and that they can win an All-Ireland," he added.
