Former Connacht Rugby captain Gavin Duffy has started training with the Mayo senior footballers.

Former Mayo midfielder David Brady, who hails from the same club as Duffy, Ballina Stephenites, told Off The Ball - Newstalk this evening that the rugby full back took part in his first training session with the county yesterday.

The 32-year-old, who has been released by Connacht Rugby, played alongside Alan Dillon and Billy-Joe Padden on the Mayo team that lost the 1999 All-Ireland MFC final to Down.

"Gavin Duffy was invited down to join up with the squad for a couple of weeks where the management will have a look at him to see where he is at," explained Mayo manager James Horan. "Duffy is a professional athlete who brings great leadership and a presence to the squad."
