A new state-of-the-art floodlit 4G pitch was officially opened by GAA president Liam O'Neill and the North's Rural Development Minister Michelle O'Neill at Derry GAA's centre of excellence in Owenbeg yesterday.

It is the latest development to take place at the 54-acre site near Dungiven, with Derry chairman John Keenan predicting that it will serve the GAA community well for generations to come. The 4G pitch received funding from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development as well as the GAA's National Infrastructure Committee.

"This fantastic new 4G facility, made possible with the funding from DARD, will assist Derry GAA in addressing issues such as health & wellbeing, community cohesion and good relations," Keenan is quoted as saying in the Derry Journal.

"The beneficiaries of these facilities will ultimately be our entire county and its local communities, whom I know will keep with the strong ethos of CLG.

"With the initial support of the National Infrastructure Committee of the GAA, we are delighted to have been able to tap into this source of funding from DARD. The net result will be that we can deliver an important strategic piece of infrastructure for the community at no cost to clubs or county."
