Donegal clubs agree to late start

Donegal's clubs have voted in favour of a late start to this year's club championships.

At a meeting on Wednesday night, the county's clubs agreed to suspend the SFC and IFC until after Donegal have exited the championship.

The decision to postpone the club championships in Donegal was first voted on last September and drew widespread criticism at the time.

The clubs were presented with a number of alternative options by Donegal CCC at the county committee meeting, including playing the first round the weekend after Donegal's Ulster SFC opener against Derry on May 25th. This was ruled out due to Gaoth Dobhair's involvement in Comortas Peile na Geltachta, while the following weekend was also voted down as it was deemed too close to a potential Ulster semi-final meeting with Fermanagh or Antrim.

In the end, the club's voted not to commence the senior and intermediate knockout competitions until after the county team was out of the Sam Maguire race.

They have not yet been given any dates for the games but there is a distinct possibility that - depending on how far Jim McGuinness' men progress - key matches could have to be played midweek so that the championships will be finished in time to allow the winners to compete in the Ulster club competitions.

A draft of proposed fixtures will be presented to clubs after Monday night's Competitions Control Committee meeting.
