Tohill secures top government appointment

February 12, 2014

Ireland manager Anthony Tohill
Derry GAA legend Anthony Tohill has been named as chief executive of the new Mid Ulster super council.

As part of local government reforms, Northern Ireland's 26 councils are being amalgamated into eleven as of April 2015 and the appointment will see the 1993 All-Ireland winner take control of the combined Magherafelt, Cookstown and Dungannon councils.

Tohill is current strategic director with Derry City Council and had been tipped as one of the favourites to head up the new Derry and Strabane council. Interviews for that post will take place next week but the former Oak Leaf County captain proved successful in Monday's interview process for the Mid Ulster post.

According to selection committee chairman Sean McPeake, the former Ireland International Rules manager finished ahead of a strong field:

"Anthony has proved himself to be a man of outstanding ability as is shown in his many walks of life."
