Mayo GAA has been plunged into grief after a talented young footballer from the county was killed in a road traffic accident in the Middle East.

Twenty-two-year-old Darragh Walsh from The Neale near Cong died when he was hit by a car in Qatar last Thursday night. The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing assistance to the family to bring his remains home. His funeral details have yet to be announced.

Poignantly, Darragh had only moved to Qatar in the past month to begin working with an Irish company there, having previously spent a year working in London. He hailed from a well-known GAA family in South Mayo, with his father Gerry being chairman of The Neale club.

A statement from The Neale GAA club read: "Crushingly bad news. The club is devastated with the news of the tragic death of Darragh Walsh. Simply hard to believe.

"We will all miss you. Truly only the good die young. Our thoughts are with Gerry and Miriam and his brothers and sisters and his extended family and friends."

A minute's silence was observed before yesterday's Connacht club SFC final between Castlebar Mitchels and St. Brigid's as a mark of respect to Darragh. Tweet
