Gavin: Westmeath are better than that

Jim Gavin has claimed Westmeath's performance against Dublin wasn't a true reflection of their capabilities.

The Lake County will ply their trade in Division 1 of the Allianz League alongside Dublin next season, but they certainly didn't look like a top tier team as they were taken apart by Gavin's men in Saturday's Leinster SFC quarter-final.

"Well they are (a good team), they got promotion to Division 1, they're getting there," he told the Irish Daily Star.

"I was very impressed when we played them in the Leinster U21 final in 2010. They ran us right to the end in a game which they probably should have won.

"I have great respect for that county. I have a lot of friends in Westmeath and I think they have done remarkably well in Division 2."

Dublin's winning margin was 16 points, but their manager still sees room for improvement ahead of their semi-final against Kildare on June 30.

"Our conversion rate is still not what it should be. We created lots of chances and didn't take them so that was one disappointing aspect.

"Any time Dublin have played Kildare in the championship has always been very close and hard-fought and I don't expect it to be anything different in four weeks."
